Kalpitiya

Back of Beyond Beaches

Robinson Crusoe, sand-between-the-toes existence at Palagama Beach Resort, Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka

The Kalpitiya peninsula is a flat, sandy spit of land tenuously attached to Sri Lanka’s west coast at Puttalam and forming a shallow, calm lagoon with the mainland as it follows the coast north. The ocean side of the isthmus has long, pristine stretches of golden sand and a few captivatingly quirky places to stay. The peninsula is a real sand-between-the-toes, get-away-from-it-all location in an undiscovered part of the island. Popular with kite surfers, the area is also a favourite of ‘no news, no shoes’ visitors who yearn for a Robinson Crusoe-like existence – even if only for a few days! The ocean off Kalpitiya is home to large pods of dolphins, and Wilpattu National Park is not far away.

“Thank you John for arranging this trip for the six of us. It went very well from start to finish and I would have no hesitation in contacting you again when we decide on our next trip to Sri Lanka that I hope will include the Maldives.”
